I’ve made no bones about mentioning just how much I am not domestic. . . I loathe damn near everything that involves keeping up a house. I’d just rather not. Tedious, mundane, thankless work it is. . . You only notice it when it isn’t getting done — which is a lot of the time around my house.
With all of that said, over the years, I’ve gotten better at it. I still do close to the bare minimum, mind you. . . But unloading & reloading the dishwasher isn’t so bad. I can do a once-over the main living areas, getting stuff thrown out or put away from floors or surfaces.
I can wipe down kitchen counters & the sinks, clean bathroom mirrors & counters, & start a new load of laundry. No problem! A few moments & I’m done! BUT, there are several things that I still don’t do even as regularly as I think I should (& we’ve already established that my standards are LOW in this department).
Floors. I really should sweep & mop & vacuum more often than I do. We have a big ol’ black dog & beige carpet. . . Lets just say that our carpet looks more like a darker brown when it gets a coat of Muttley hair over it. It is EXTREMELY noticeable when I finally break down & whip out that vacuum! LOL. Ugh.
Then, there’s the tubs & toilets. Who likes scrubbing those anyway?? Gross — especially the toilets! But, it still gets done from time to time. . . There just comes a point when it MUST be done to stay sanitary, ya know?
Dusting, I can take or leave. We live in the desert now & there’s nearly ALWAYS a layer of dust on most surfaces. Even if it’s been dusted recently, within the hour, there’s another small film, so it’s importance is diminished as far as I can see. . .
So, what’s the absolute WORST? I’ll tell you what: it concerns the laundry. We don’t wear new or fancy clothing around here, so sorting is a minimal effort. It really doesn’t matter as much when you’re using cold water anyway. I might do a load of whites to bleach or just towels or just undergarments or something to that effect, but I don’t stress over it. Plus, making sure we actually have clean clothes & towels & such isn’t too hard: load the washer, swap it to the dryer. Easy-peasy.
The chore I hate doing the most is actually folding the laundry & putting it away! What a waste of time & energy! I can’t stand it. . . &, frankly, I hate it so much, I rarely do it at all. There’s a few baskets on the floor in our bedroom that has clean laundry in it. That’s where we pull our clothes from to get dressed each day. It drives the handsome husband absolutely CRAZY. . . He’s gotten terribly pissed at me over it a few times — to the point where he’s just done it himself or insisted that we at least do it together.
I just have a disconnect about it, I guess. I don’t worry about wrinkles, because, frankly, I wear mostly jeans & tee shirts anyway & any wrinkles fall away within minutes of putting them on. . . & if something does wrinkle drastically, it’s no big deal to pop it back in the dryer with a damp wash cloth to make it right again. . . SO, it’s just one of those things that doesn’t get done. It’s SO easy, yet I hate it that much.
It’s just another reason why I am enrolled in college, working towards my degree finally — the handsome husband would do better as a house-spouse than I! It is my academic motivation to not feel on the hook for the domestic crap! Haha. Whatever works, eh? 😉
