The Chore I Hate the Most

I’ve made no bones about mentioning just how much I am not domestic. . . I loathe damn near everything that involves keeping up a house. I’d just rather not. Tedious, mundane, thankless work it is. . . You only notice it when it isn’t getting done — which is a lot of the time around my house.

I can't stand ANY of them, but there's one that's worse than the rest. (image from morgueFile.com)

With all of that said, over the years, I’ve gotten better at it. I still do close to the bare minimum, mind you. . . But unloading & reloading the dishwasher isn’t so bad. I can do a once-over the main living areas, getting stuff thrown out or put away from floors or surfaces.

I can wipe down kitchen counters & the sinks, clean bathroom mirrors & counters, & start a new load of laundry. No problem! A few moments & I’m done! BUT, there are several things that I still don’t do even as regularly as I think I should (& we’ve already established that my standards are LOW in this department).

Floors. I really should sweep & mop & vacuum more often than I do. We have a big ol’ black dog & beige carpet. . . Lets just say that our carpet looks more like a darker brown when it gets a coat of Muttley hair over it. It is EXTREMELY noticeable when I finally break down & whip out that vacuum! LOL. Ugh.

Then, there’s the tubs & toilets. Who likes scrubbing those anyway?? Gross — especially the toilets! But, it still gets done from time to time. . . There just comes a point when it MUST be done to stay sanitary, ya know?

Dusting, I can take or leave. We live in the desert now & there’s nearly ALWAYS a layer of dust on most surfaces. Even if it’s been dusted recently, within the hour, there’s another small film, so it’s importance is diminished as far as I can see. . .

So, what’s the absolute WORST? I’ll tell you what: it concerns the laundry. We don’t wear new or fancy clothing around here, so sorting is a minimal effort. It really doesn’t matter as much when you’re using cold water anyway. I might do a load of whites to bleach or just towels or just undergarments or something to that effect, but I don’t stress over it. Plus, making sure we actually have clean clothes & towels & such isn’t too hard: load the washer, swap it to the dryer. Easy-peasy.

The chore I hate doing the most is actually folding the laundry & putting it away! What a waste of time & energy! I can’t stand it. . . &, frankly, I hate it so much, I rarely do it at all. There’s a few baskets on the floor in our bedroom that has clean laundry in it. That’s where we pull our clothes from to get dressed each day. It drives the handsome husband absolutely CRAZY. . . He’s gotten terribly pissed at me over it a few times — to the point where he’s just done it himself or insisted that we at least do it together.

I just have a disconnect about it, I guess. I don’t worry about wrinkles, because, frankly, I wear mostly jeans & tee shirts anyway & any wrinkles fall away within minutes of putting them on. . . & if something does wrinkle drastically, it’s no big deal to pop it back in the dryer with a damp wash cloth to make it right again. . . SO, it’s just one of those things that doesn’t get done. It’s SO easy, yet I hate it that much.

It’s just another reason why I am enrolled in college, working towards my degree finally — the handsome husband would do better as a house-spouse than I! It is my academic motivation to not feel on the hook for the domestic crap! Haha. Whatever works, eh? 😉

  • I have to admit that stepping on something sticky is usually what motivates me to mop. And the laundry I save shows on Tivo especially to be watched while folding. Modern Family is usually my laundry folding show. I’m always shocked three piles can be folded in one show but it I didn’t have anything to look at and I was just folding then I would keep getting up to do something else.

    • I’m the same way about mopping! LOL. I won’t lie. . . In fact, I need to get it done this evening. . . & I’ve tried the whole watch a TV show while I fold bit. . . Sure, it helps sometimes, but, really, I still procrastinate indefinitely. LOL

  • We are a family of six – I do laundry every single day. For some reason – I really don’t mind it. Even the folding (although I usually listen to audiobooks as I do it). But the putting it away – yes, that part is miserable.

  • I have a basket of laundry from last week that needs folding lol
I folded the towels straight out of the dryer but it’s the socks and underwear that need folding.

  • Please don’t decide to hate me but my husband does the laundry. I think it’s because he thinks I’ll ruin his shirts but who cares – he does it. He doesn’t put it away though which is a bummer. But hey – I’ll take it. Chores in general kinda suck if you think about it. Really.
Thank you so much for linking up with Finish the Sentence Friday!

    • That IS awfully convenient! 😉 My husband has gotten to the point where he’ll do his laundry rather than waiting for me. . . That’s kinda nice. . . & yesterday, I got home from my classes & he had unloaded, reloaded & started the dishwasher. . . SO, he DOES help out. I AM blessed in that department — that’s for sure! 😉

  • I hate all chores. Period. Hubs is the domesticated one who does the cleaning, laundry, garbage running out, etc. Me? I just sit and look cute. On occasion I will eventually do something but I avoid it for as long as possible unless it’s something pissing me off.

    • It’s A LOT more like that at my house than I would usually care to admit! 😉 BUT, that is why I am a full-time student — because I realize this & I am willing to bring home the bacon (eventually) so that I can just opt OUT. LOL. 😉

  • I’m with you; folding laundry isn’t high on my list of fun things to do. And there seems to be just so much of it all the time!! What a great reason to get a college education: get out of doing laundry!! 😉

  • Chores in general stink, let’s be real. And I am not a superstar at any of them, really.
I actually don’t mind laundry at all. In fact, the folding part is kind of the part I like best. Something about having it clean and ordered makes me happy. Putting away, though…I drop the ball on that a lot. It’s a goal I’m working on. 😀

  • I hate folding and putting away the most of the laundry too, but I have to do it. If I attempt to live out of baskets, nobody can find anything to wear, which means I have to stop whatever I’m doing to find clothes for 3 kids and a husband. But I do have a system for it, like I make my stacks of everyone’s clothes as I fold, and it’s the same pattern every time. Most of my clothes, I throw in a bin folded, or hang up in my closet, and I keep hangers near the washer and dryer to hang clothes up there and then take to closets stealing empty hangers to put back near the washer and dryer. It’s about the only chore I do where i have an actual system.

    • If I had children in my household on a consistent basis, I, too, would be forced into HAVING to do it. I totally get it! As it is, I occasionally need to stop what I am doing to help the handsome husband find clothes too. . . SO, I could just imagine ALSO having to do that for three little ones! Ugh. Yeah. That’d break me of the habit of just leaving it! That’s for sure! 😉

  • I don’t mind the sorting and manipulating the washer and dryer. I HATE folding and putting away…I probably hate the putting away part the most because I’m so badly organized right now. Something ya just gotta do, though…right?

    • I think that is a HUGE part of it, Jill… When EVERYTHING has a CLEAR “home,” it is MUCH easier to put them away. . . I keep gaining weight, so a lot of my clothes don’t even fit, but I am hesitant to get rid of them. . . It could very well be more psychological than I realized. 😉 Ugh.

  • I suck at housework, and I don’t live laundry, but it is one chore that I actually do regularly. I watch a show I dvr’ed while I fold it, and everyone puts away their own. Makes it slightly less sucky b
